Nag Panchami

Nag Panchami is an age-old Indian festival that is celebrated in a courageous way in which snakes are worshipped. On the auspicious day of Shraavana, Nag Panchami is celebrated with pomp and show in India. This festival is followed by Jhapan Mela which is a tribal festival in which Goddess Manasa is worshipped. The Jhapan Mela shows many ways to trick snakes and devotees dance to the tune of been or snake flutes.

Raksha Bandhan

On the full moon day in the month of Shraavana, Raksha Bandhan is celebrated all across India. This is a special festival to honor the love and bond of brothers and sisters. The sisters tie a rakhi which is a sacred thread on the wrists of her brother for his long life and brothers take an oath to protect their sisters for a lifetime. The sisters perform aarti and put tilak on their brother’s forehead. Sisters are also gifted with return gifts. 

Nehru Trophy Snake Boat Race

The Nehru Trophy makes this boat race one of the thrilling and exciting boat races in Kerala. This race takes place in memory of Lt. Shri Jawaharlal Nehru. He was so impressed with Alleppey that he gifted the people with a trophy. The race started in the year 1952 and it has continued since then. About 70 boats take part in the competition and the best way to watch the match is by being in a houseboat.

Krishna Janmashtami and Dahi Handi

This day is celebrated as the birthday of Shri Krishna, the 8th reincarnation of Lord Vishnu. Lord Krishna is praised in the world for his wisdom and how to have a fulfilling life on Earth. The second day is the best-highlighted one known as Dahi Handi. Clay bots consisting of butter are hanged high up from buildings and there is competition as to who can break those pots first and eat butter and earn cash.

Ganesh Chaturthi

This is a festival celebrated on the mark on the birth of Lora Ganesh who is an elephant-headed god. This festival is celebrated with cultural activities, food, and music. During this festival, many Ganesh temples are decorated and the pandals are erected all around the city. The highlight of the festival is the last day. The statues are taken on a parade with music, dance, and throw of colors. The parade will end on different beaches. Later the idols are submerged in water.

Tarnetar Fair

This is a Gujrati fair known for the culture, music, food, and entertainment. The festival is celebrated for the young men and women who look to find their future spouses. Magic shows, carnival rides, handicrafts stalls, etc. are given in the fairs. This fair is celebrated in Thangadh town of Gujarat. According to mythology, this fair is linked to Draupadi where Arjun won in the archery to win Draupadi’s hands. During this festival, people take a dip in the holy tank to attain salvation in human life.

Independence Day

Independence Day is celebrated in India on the 15th of August since 1947. It is an important festival and Indians can feel the sense of patriotism when hoisting the national flag during this day. The Prime Minister hoists the flag and addresses the public at the Red Fort. The Indian Army puts up a march past show. The main celebrations take place at Red Fort but it also takes place in different states of India.
